The first thing that will grab your attention about The Iman Experience is the music, the sound. Iman's sound is extraordinary, different than what is heard on the airwaves today. Her sound encompasses the characteristic of R&B, soul, funk and gospel: Thumping bass lines, sweeping strings, and piercing horns, arrangements that are orchestrated and lush. Lyrically, Iman's lyrics are written and filled with passion and emotions which is heard and felt when she sings them, and are written from her soul based on personal experiences. The fifteen songs on The Iman Experience is her story, her journeys.
The first single, "I Will Not Cry Over You" one of fifteen cuts Iman wrote on the album, is referred to as "A Woman's Anthem, a female empowerment song, written by a woman, from a woman's point of view, for women however, this single is for anyone who has been hurt, lied to, cheated on, dumped, and heart-broken. The powerful emancipating message in this cut is "You done me wrong, but life will go on, I will survive, I will not cry", a modern day reflection of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive". This song encourages anyone that has been hurt or disappointed by someone they can rise up and be strong under adverse situations.
On the cut A Good Man is Hard to Find, Iman expresses her respect and appreciation for the kings of the earth, all the men who are out there working hard and doing whatever it takes to provide, support, and take care of their families. While on the other hand, Iman sends a strong message to the females who are not so appreciative of the man in their lives. "Why can't you see you're the one that he adores, he treats you like a queen, he gives his all and so much more". To a riveting hook "A good man is hard to find, stop complaining, stop being ungrateful a good man is hard to find".
This CD is not gimmicky or trended, it is classic soul and R&B, and it is expressed on every song. The music production, which was written, arranged and co-produced by Iman is saturated with harmony and melody. Listening to "The Iman Experience" reminds you of sleek disco, Southern gritty soul, the 60's and 70's "Stax" sound, and the sweet seductive "Philly Sound", with a touch of jazz, a tablespoon of Patrice Rushen, a teaspoon of Roberta Flack , half a teaspoon of Jill Scott, and a pinch of Natalie Cole.
